About the artist
Lloyd Toone breathes life into contemporary and figurative forms, transforming ordinary objects into extraordinary treasures. Leather shoe soles, electrical cable and fabric are built up over wooden armatures until the surface itself carries the figure.
Origins
Lloyd Toone was born in 1940 in Chase City, Virginia.
Approach
He works in a figurative and abstract style out of the Abstract Expressionist tradition and the symbolic image style of Black Africa.
Materials
His signature approach builds thickly textured surfaces from fabrics, leather shoe soles on wooden armatures, and colorful electrical cables. Earlier work is in collage and works on paper.
Scope
The collective works span 1969 to 2025 and include painting, sculpture, and collage.

Recognition
In 2012 he was featured in Highlights for Children magazine as Absolute Artist.
