Lloyd Toone Biography

The soul of the Artist

LLOYD TOONE Biography

Lloyd Toone, through creativity and perseverance has developed a prolific artistic career that spans over five decades. He is known for working in the figurative style of Black Africa and Contemporary Art. Hismotivation for creating provocative art was derived from childhood, “and later my needs as an educator with an appreciation for the resourcefulness of indigenous cultures that believe in reincarnation and re-purpose.”

As an art therapist Toone’s technique is focused on mastering individualized methods. He works with mixed mediums that are not often found or promoted in most art institutions. His work celebrates cross-cultures and cross-continents from Egyptian, African, and East Asian influences with themes that evolve from figurative and abstract concepts embedded in the contemporary Black-American experience.

After graduating from Hampton University with a Bachelor of Science in Education, Toone earned a Master of Science in Education from Manhattan College, New York in 1975. He dedicated 30 years of his life to Children’s Village (New York), as Director of the Art Department. At this non-profit organization that opened in 1851, Toone was more than just a department head, he shared the commitment and motto which was to help children develop and nurture life-long relationships with family, friends, and mentors. Since retiring he has consistently exhibited in solo and group shows.

During the 1980’s, Toone was an influential force in Harlem's Second Renaissance. He has revived, reshaped, and inspired younger generations to creatively contribute to Harlem during its ongoing gentrification. Toone’s mixed-media wall sculptures are both metaphorical and conceptual.

Lloyd Toone has the ability to transform discarded organic objects like wood, leather, aluminum cans, and pieces of old furniture, into harmonious monumental forms. His latest contemporary sculptures and colorful paintings reflect his light from living through some of life’s darkest hours. He earnestly supports the ideals of recycling and protecting this world environment called earth.

A SOULFUL JOURNEY

THE YARDBIRDS

A Soulful Journey”, is Toone’s ideal of “coming full circle”, since

"THE YARDBIRDS" may roam, they  always come home to roost.

Toone’s flock of yard birds is ever evolving,  but continues to be largely made of shoe soles and recycled plastics. His ability to transform discarded organic objects like wood, leather, aluminum cans, and pieces of old furniture, into harmonious compositional forms are considered monumental by many. His latest contemporary sculptures and colorful paintings are a reflection of the light that come from living through some of life’s darkest hours and supports the ideals of recycling and protecting the environment on this place we call earth.

"Stylin"
Off the Wall:  Postmodern Art at Reynolda
During the 1960s when postmodernism was first used to describe contemporary art, it was generally understood that it meant that a work of art was not only chronologically "after" modernism, it was also "against" it, rejecting the dominant art movement of the twentieth century's ideology.
Postmodernism has since become an accepted descriptive term for culture during the final decades of the twentieth century... what it  means for art (architecture, literature, dance, music, film, fashion) to be "postmmodern".
INComplexity and Contradiction in Architecture, published by the Museum of Modern Art in 1966, author and architect Robert Venturi declared:"I (. . .)
